My name is Jan Slack and I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a private practice in La Mesa, CA where I serve individuals, couples, and families in the San Diego area. My goal is to help others so that they may live as fully and as well as possible.
I hold a M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bethel Seminary in San Diego and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In my practice I use a variety of approaches to therapy, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitivization Reprocessing) for which I currently have a Level 1 certification.
My training at Bethel Seminary allows me, when requested, to incorporate a client’s spiritual beliefs into the course of their therapy. For Christians and non-Christians alike I am sensitive to each individual’s place on their spiritual path. My clients sometimes request to use the Bible, incorporate prayer, or just talk about God. I am happy to apply this form of sensitivity to our work together, yet of course understand my clients who do not wish to address issues in this way. Please ask me about spiritually-sensitive or Christian-focused work if this interests you.
In my free time, I enjoy doing triathlons, surfing, sailing, gardening and animal training.
My Clients – Children, Teens & Adults
My clients include children, teens, or adults who are facing a variety of problems such as trauma, abuse, depression and addiction. I often work with women and teens who are dealing with trauma or abuse under crisis conditions. Not all my clients are dealing with emotional pain though. Some are simply feeling stuck, unmotivated, or unfocused. Some are feeling well but interested in deepening their understanding of themselves and enriching their relationships. My background also includes extensive work with the foster care system and the Native American population of Eastern San Diego County.
Personalized Care
I take each client’s needs into account when planning their best course of therapy, which will naturally be different from person to person. For some people it may be a cognitive-behavioral focus on thoughts, behaviors and emotions. For others we may use art therapy to explore their feelings, or for children play-therapy may be the most beneficial course. In every case, we will work together through a spirit of trust and confidence.
If you have any questions that are not addressed here, or would just prefer to learn more about therapy through a conversation, I invite you to call me at 619-335-5373. I look forward to helping you.
